TF Afrikhan Magik's Western Pleasure Championship Win

Talaria Type in Tampa

It was a beautiful late fall weekend for the 40th edition of the Tampa Thanksgiving Show.  On this weekend that reminds us to be thankful for all that we have, all that goes well in our lives, and the opportunities we all have to make the most of our lives, regardless of our religious, political, or other very personal beliefs, we were first time witnesses to this very well produced and prestigious Class A show.

Our Talaria program was represented in style - in top form - after being prepared by the outstanding team comprised of the Talaria Farms' & Wilson Training Center's staffs.  Peri's and Mike's hard work and stylish presentations, in performance and in halter, culminated in yet another important statement regarding Talaria Type's diversity and broad appeal.  Botswana get proved again that they are capable of competing not just at the Egyptian Event but in very competitive open shows as well.

TF Afrikhan Gold, proving that the Egyptian Event is not the only show at which he is capable of winning multiple championships, was both Champion Jr Hunter Pleasure Horse & Champion Hunter Pleasure Adult Amateur to Ride Horse.  Afrikhan Gold also won his Gelding Halter Class against several quality geldings, shown to the win by Bryant Wilson, Mike's talented young son.

Brother TF Afrikhan Magik was the Reserve Champion Jr Western Pleasure Horse.  Peri's tireless commitment to these two Botswana sons will serve them very well as they turn the page from their "formative" years to their next chapters and placements with just the right amateur owners.

Not to be outdone by his younger brothers (by two years), TF Tsanzibar was Champion Ladies Side Saddle Horse in an all disciplines class, beating three talented Country English Pleasure horses.  Peri added that crown after having previously won the Open WP Reserve Championship on "T-Bar".

The beautiful TF Tamarind (also by Botswana) was Reserve Champion Mare (as a two-year old), in another very competitive halter class.

TF Tsanzibar, at the 2009 Region 12 Championships, earned the Reserve Championship in Wester Pleasure Side Saddle,

ridden beautifully by Peri Tilghman.  He continued with a top five in the ATR WP class. Pleasure.

TF's Kestrelia and Royal Shahbaz followed on Mike Wilson's stylish lead.

The Siblings are at it Again

In the Two Years & Older Mare class, Kestrelia was top five (third) in a very competitive class.

Royal Shahbaz was Reserve Champion Stallion, Two-Years & Older.   These two siblings were so very different than the rest of the horses in their classes, the contrasts were striking - and provocative.  This, is Talaria Type!

Region 13 Reserve Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse -

Kissemee Julyen V (Jullyen El Jamaal x La Kijan by Bey Shah)

Kissemee Julyen V w/Liz Bentley

Last October, we acquired this lovely young mare with two things in mind.  We knew that a Bey Shah daughter and grand daughter had previously crossed well with Botswana (think Afrikhans Shah, Bey, Gold, Magic, etc.).  Upon seeing this gifted lovely young Jullyen mare being worked under saddle, we saw the possibilities and could not resist.  We took the plunge.  But first, before turning her out, into the brood mare herd, to be a Botswana bride, we thought that she had way too much talent not to first try and manifest it for her into proven show ring talent.  So we asked Liz if she would consider taking Kissemee into her program, and she eagerly accepted.  Her first two class A shows proved to be underwhelming stories - in terms of prizes.  But Liz's perserverence, and dedication to her philosophy of a deliberate, no-need-to-push-and-cut-corners program (aka Girlie Training) paid off in a big way the morning of 21 June.  Thank you Liz for your even-handed positive approach.  We look forward to a 2011 foal out of her by Botswana.

ALABAMA ALL ARABIAN SHOW

Talaria Farms sent a string of horses, all under seven years old, to the very competitive Region XII qualifying 2009 Alabama All Arabian Show, held over the weekend of March 27-29.  Talaria horses came home with the following prizes:

CHAMPIONSHIPS: Champion Mare (TF Kestrelia), Champion Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse (TF Afrikhan Gold), and Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse (TF Afrikhan Magik).

Sheikh al Sudan, who belongs to Ellen Guillory,  also trotted away with the first place (no championship offered)  in the Arabian Sport Horse Hunter Under Saddle class.

RESERVE CHAMPIONSHIPS:  Reserve Champion Stallion (TF Royal Shahbaz), Reserve Champion Hunter Pleasure Jr. Horse (Sheikh al Sudan), Reserve Champion Western Pleasure Jr. Horse (TF Prince de Beers), and Reserve Champion Western Pleasure, JTR (TF Gaellic Gold).

For two of these horses (Royal Shahbaz and Sheikh al Sudan, this was their very first show ever—and for  Prince de Beers (who has several halter wins at previous Egyptian Events) it was his first show under saddle.

We are extremely proud of our trainers (Mike Wilson, Peri Tilghman, and Talaria’s Shannon Jett) for preparing and showing the Talaria horses so beautifully at this show—and, especially,  for the fact that all the horses, except one, are out of the Talaria Farms breeding program.  We are no less proud of our magnfiicent professional staff at the farm - Jose & Anjelica Palomera, Kelly Davis, & Dana Jackson, without whom this is simply not possible.

The Boss

More fun than a barrel of monkeys, the monkey on Allison's back (and Liz's too), nothing more than monkey business, etc., etc., but were there horses?

Oh yes, and there were horses.

This was not a seminar for the fair weather horseman.  A cool rainy weekend greeted devoted seminar attendees, but seemed not to dampen the enthusiasm of either them or their seminarians.  Our guests traveled from points afar (such as the states of Washington, Texas, & Arkansas), as well as from England, France, & Switzerland) and from across the Southeast & across the county.

They asked tough questions, and they asked intelligent questions.

Sheila Varian came in from the Central Valley of California, Liz Bentley traveled in from Missouri, Johanna Ullstrom (with Jeremy in tow) flew in earlier in the week (to get some time in with her Egyptian Event string) from Brussels, & Mike Wilson and Peri Tilghman came up from central Florida.  They maintained a spirited dialogue throughout the entire two days that was informative, fascinating, and often very funny.

In addition to Nancy Pierce's wonderful photographs, we thank Christy Hazel and our dear friend Amy Austin for

their photographic contributions.

Demonstrations with Talaria horses covered topics such as beginning halter, identifying characteristics that indicated futures in specific performance disciplines, show clipping, techniques to improve performance, and all was demonstrated with an emphasis on

reward rather than punishment based training.

Saturday night’s presentation featured some of Talaria’s 2009 show string, Madhin Nile Moons’ two beautiful new-born foals out of Botswana daughters Nairobi and Star of Afrika, and Afrikhan Alkhemi’s exotic first foal – a lovely daughter out of Maya Naufali, and, of course, Afrikhan Shah’s first three foals – you must see them to believe them.  The new foals all represented the breeding progeny of the main man still - Botswana.

Two hot breakfasts, lunches, and Saturday night’s cocktails and dinner were prepared and served by that incredible pair – Jane and John.  It gets better and better.  A special thank-you to Jane and John for the private dinner Friday evening, in honor of our seminarians and a few very special guests.  It was prepared and formally served and it was over the top.

Yes, it WAS More Fun than a Barrel of Monkeys, but no, HE is not the proverbial monkey on your back, nor was it a

weekend of Monkey Business.

IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE SPECTACULAR

It can be said that the incredible range of emotions we experience through our journey, seeking a level of excellence that is likely unattainable, encourages us at times to just want to give up, and at other times to be absolutely anxious for the arrival of breeding season.  While we at

Talaria Farms have a breeding program that has produced some pretty fancy horses and, just as all good breeders have, we have bred our share of sound quality individuals that just don't evoke that "WOW!" emotion.  So what happens to the geldings?

"From Foal to Four Year-Old - Training for  Success In Halter & Performance:

If you missed our March 2008 seminar, you might not want to miss this one.  With our 2008 seminarians returning, and being joined by

Liz Bentley of IIB Farms, we look forward to expanding upon our 2008 foundation theme, then transition from halter into performance with the same commitment to humane positive training techniques.

Join us for a weekend of fun and education, not to mention the Talaria tradition of wonderful food and refreshment.  Saturday night's horse presentation will feature, in addition to Botswana, some of our exciting 2009 foals at their mothers' sides, and a select few individuals representing our 2009 show string.  A special Sunday morning feature has been planned (with a new twist), that will surely provoke a memorable start to our second day.

You can see a recap of our 2008 program if you scroll down.  For more information on our March seminar, CLICK HERE
