It Takes A Village!

Talaria had a wonderful 2009 U.S. Egyptian Event.  It starts in late June every year, and requires twelve months of dedication and hard work to be prepared for the first week in June.  The culmination of our program’s efforts came together in six spectacular days in Lexington.

There were a total of 18 Talaria horses that made it back to the championship classes on the last day.  Saturday started out with a bang when TF Afrikhan Gold (Botswana x Rohara Shahblee) won Supreme Champion Gelding with Mike Wilson at the lead.  How in the world were we able to get him tacked, braided, and refocused in time for Peri to ride him to victory in the very next class, the Hunter Pleasure Championship?

Mike & Gold exited the ring. Mike pulled his halter and roses, Kelly bridled him, Peri adjusted the bridle & then started braiding his mane. Norman held Magik as Shannon, already tacked up and waiting with her hunter horse, began braiding Gold’s tail as soon as he was at a standstill (while Ellen held her saddled horse, Sudan). Kelly braided his forelock, Mike put his saddle on, Joel handed out rubber bands to the braiders. Kelly put on his breast collar, then finished braiding the mane, Peri adjusted his girth, then put on her jacket.  Kelly gave her a leg up and off Peri & Gold rode into the arena to win the championship  .   .   .   .   with only a five minute tack change!

It Takes a Village, Indeed!

Ellen Guillory’s beautiful gelding, Sheikh Al Sudan (Botswana x SH Heumoresque), won Most Classic Head Male, which makes three the number of get Botswana has sired who have won this award (2 by this dam).  Sudan also placed 3rd in that Hunter Pleasure Championship.  He was ridden and trained by Talaria’s own Shannon Jett.

In the Western Pleasure Championship, Peri rode TF Afrikhan Magik (Botswana x Maggie Lee BA) to Champion and Shannon rode TF Prince DeBeers (Botswana x SS Queen of Hearts) to Reserve.  It is noteworthy to say Prince DeBeers also won the World Class 4-5 Yr Old Stallion Class and was second on one judge's card in the senior stallion halter championship class.  All four Talaria performance horses are truly ambassadors, disproving the myth that pretty and performance can’t go together!

TF Hassan (Botswana x SH Heumoresque) won Reserve Champion ATH Stallions with Amy Austin at the lead.

Saturday night was the highlight for us all.  It was a proud moment to see one of the original Ramses mares, Ramses Minx (Thee Desperado x Ramses Effendi), bred by Talaria Farms, owned by Liezl Els and handled by Johanna Ullstrom, win Senior Champion & Supreme Champion Mare.

Words cannot express how we felt during the final act, to see our beloved Botswana win Senior Champion and Supreme Champion Stallion - unanimously.

Talaria’s success is due to a wonderful group of people who have come together to work as a team that has common goals.  Special thanks to our clients who believe in us, to Jose who conditions & schools the show horses, and the rest of the staff who work all those long hours.

Johanna Ullstrom, Mike Wilson, Peri Tilghman, and Shannon Jett presented the horses with pride and dignity, in both Halter and Performance classes.   Amy Austin, Terry Bentley, Erin Davis, Norman Davis, Joel Desmarteau, Julie Durall, Ellen Guillory, Jazmin Palomera, Kenny McDonald, Ken Scribner, Mike Wade, and Wendy Richey all did amazingly well handling and presenting horses in the Amateur classes.  It takes a village, and we appreciate everybody’s role.

Thanks to Christy Hazel and Amy Austin for your photographs.  And thank you again, to our dear friend Amy, for the little things we know you do, and for those we don't.
