Botswana & Peri

Out for a Ride at the Kentucky Horse Park

At the age of 12, his 13th US Egyptian Event.

After Talaria’s incredible 2009 show, we realized that a show like that is really a once in a lifetime achievement.  Continuing Botswana’s remarkable position as the leading US Straight Egyptian sire, for another year, was not something we expected.  As those runs of success seem more realistic for legendary stallions with many, many hundreds of foals to their credit, Botswana has now earned that position for the fourth consecutive year, and done so this year with 109 registered foals.

In addition to his leading sire status, Botswana get won multiple top fives and top tens plus the following 6 Championships:

Junior Champion Filly

Egyptian Breeders Challenge Filly Championship

Egyptian Breeders Challenge Colt Championship

Futurity Yearling Filly Championship
Hunter Pleasure Championship

Western Pleasure Championship

Photos of him being ridden by Peri through the rolling lush pastures of the Kentucky Horse Park capture this well rounded stallion just two months after a very scary colic episode during which we all feared (but would not believe to be) the worst.  He had never been sick a day in his life.  One morning, Mr. B had showed signs of colic and after the usual procedures did not deliver satisfactory results, he was off to Auburn.  Within hours was on the table and opened up to reveal an intestine that was – thankfully - not flipped, and after a thorough full inspection, declared all was healthy and carefully returned, and he was closed.  We all remained anxious post surgery, but two months later, he was being collected again, trailered to his now very familiar stall in Kentucky and, as evidenced by the photos, happily under saddle.

But it was not all about Botswana, as it never is nor should be.   Talaria Farms clients all sent very good horses to us for preparation, evaluation, and inclusion in the Event string if deemed worthy.  While many are Botswana get, several other stallions were represented by their get under the Talaria flag.  Not only did they make that cut, they all represented their owners proudly with wins and we’d like to think they also represented Talaria’s preparation program by looking their very best.

None of this occurs without a dedicated and loyal staff of professionals who are in the trenches day in and day out, back at the stalls and, of course, at the farm.

Jose and Anjelica Palomera, Talaria Farms' Barn Managers, after ten years of service, continue to set the precedent for work ethic, loyalty to the Talaria program, and most importantly - a devotion for and loyalty to the breed.  They deliver what they promise – their best - daily, weekly, yearly.

Dana Jackson, Talaria’s steady and willing Business Manager, continues to grow in her position and prove the formula at Talaria Farms is no fluke - character is THE foundation element and sets the structure for all else that grows.

These types of show successes take the better part of a year to fine tune for and, of course, many years of establishing a program just to be in position to have the chance for fine tuning.  Mike Wilson and Peri Tilghman of Wilson Training Center, for the fourth year in a row, proved once again to be a wonderful Talaria Farms partner – sharing in the vision and planning strategy when trees are dormant back at the farm.

Great horseman just have a 6th sense sometimes.  For instance, after his first work-out in preparation for the Jr Western Pleasure classe, Peri was not comfortable with Prince Debeers' lack of concentration and decided to switch this young stallion to a hunter saddle and "let him out".  He responded so well, she decided to prepare him the rest of the days leading up to his competition as a Jr HP and proceeded to win both the Novice Class as well as the Jr HP Class.  Four weeks later, Peri returned to the same arena and Prince Debeers placed third in the very competitive Region 14 Jr Hunter Pleasure Championship Class!   Peri also engineered the Afrikhan Express (Afrikhans Gold & Magik) to repeat as this years champion HP & WP Champions.  This is the fourth consecutive year that she has ridden the champion WP horse for Talaria - all Botswana sons - TF's Afrikhan Bey, Tsanzibar, & Afrikhan Magik.

Johanna Ullstrom, from ArcticTern Training Stables in St Truiden, Belgium, made the long trip West, taking time from her busy schedule, and showed for us for the third consecutive year.  She also generously shared two of her best.  Our program was enriched and levitated with two outstanding grooms, including Karolina for the show and Nele for several months leading up to the Event as well as at the show.

Jazmin Palomera, evolving into a young horsewoman her parents as well as the entire Talaria family are proud of, in addition to her tireless grooming duties, showed amateur halter and performance again this year.  She continues along a path we are eager to follow.

Jane and John keep proving that they are invaluable to our entire staff, clients, and guests by keeping us all well fed and hydrated in an incredible classy style, throughout this annual marathon in June.  (Mostly though, I just love the way they spoil me by satisfying my perfectly idiosyncratic culinary requirements).

Amy Austin, our dear friend and Talaria Farms family member, quietly supports us in so many ways; pitching in here, seeing something there, showing amateur, and always coming through with some great photos allowing so much of the story to be shared visually for all to enjoy.

My long time senior project manager, Marcus Jackson, has become an annual Talaria Farms Egyptian Event fixture, often to the loss of my business’s best interest.  His contribution is the size of his heart -huge.

To grooms Gustavo and Manuel, and to Darryl and David for their installation and transport excellence; we value your excellence as well as your positive spirits and stamina to keep going.

It has and will forever continue to be about personnel in support of the horses, and the inspiration to make it happen, regardless of the success.   Without them, we simply could not do this.

Without the inspiration and aesthetic vision, it would not happen.  The inspiration and vision are pure Allison.

Thanks to all.  The work has already begun, in preparation for 2011.
